EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX FOR CHORAL SINGING
MARIBOR – 2012

COMPETITION RULES

Article 1 – THE EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX FOR CHORAL SINGING is organized by the six international contests which follow: ARREZO (Italy) – DEBRECEN (Hungary) – MARIBOR (Slovenia) – TOLOSA (Spain) – TOURS (France) – VARNA (Bulgary).

Article 2 – The European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in 2012 will be held on 22th April 2012 in the city of Maribor – Slovenia.

Article 3 –The choirs who can take part in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing are those who won the Grand Prix at any of the six contests the previous year. Under exceptional circumstances, a substitute choir may be called.

Article 4 – Except case of force circumstances, a choir that refuses to take part in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing will be banned from any of the ten contests organized by the cities mentioned in article 1 following the European Grand Prix that he did not take part in.

Article 5 – These choirs must perform in the same group/category as in the contest won (mixed choir, female choir, children’s choir ...)

Article 6 – All the choirs who take part in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing must participate with the same number of choristers that they had for the qualification contest. However a margin of 10% more or less of this number of choristers is allowed (enlarged to the nearest integer) with a minimum of 12 choristers and a maximum of 60 choristers. If these limits are not respected the choir will be automatically disqualified.

Article 7 - It is reminded that only the Amateur choirs may take part in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing.

Article 8 – The programme is up to the choirmaster and it should include various works throughout times and styles. The length of the whole programme (music only!) should be around 25 minutes, but not less than 22 minutes and not more more than 28 minutes. The Instrumental accompaniment should not exceed eight minutes.

If these margins are not respected the choir will be punished: 1 minute - 1 point, 2 minutes - 2 points, 3 minutes - 3 points, etc.

Article 9 – The winning choir is granted the appellation “EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX FOR CHORAL SINGING FOR 2012”.

The choir will be awarded an honorary diploma, Trophy and a cash prize at the amount of 3.000 (three thousand) Euro. The competing choirs will be awarded a smaller copy of the Trophy and a Diploma mentioning them as finalist of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing.

Article 10 – The winning choir in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing cannot be nominated by any of the contests organized by the cities mentioned in article 1 following the competition the choir won.

Article 11 – The “Festival des Choeurs Lauréats” (partner of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing) will offer the winning choir:

  1. An invitation to perform some concerts in the surroundings of Vaison la Romaine (France).
  2. An important indemnity for these concerts which will be stated by the “Festival des Choeurs Lauréats”
  3. Travel expenses to be determined together by the winning choir and the Festival.
  4. The Festival will provide all accommodation, meal and travel expenses at Vaison la Romaine and in the surroundings.

Article 12
a) The Organizing Committee covers the expenses of the choirs taking part in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing, for their stay during the competition period – accommodation and food (breakfast/lunch/dinner) from 17:00 p.m. on April 20th, 2012 till 10:00 a.m. on April 23rd, 2012.

b) Participants have free accommodation in student dormitories. In case the choir would prefer to stay in the hotel the organiser covers the accommodation costs in the amount of the student dormitories. The choir has to pay the additional costs (for details contact Mr. Varl).

c) The participants have the obligation to be present from Saturday, 21st April until the end of Prize giving Ceremony on Sunday 22nd April.

d) The Organizing Committee provides local bus transportation from the place of accommodation to the concert venues during the whole event for the participants who do not have their own bus (for details contact Mr. Varl).

e) Choirs must take part at the additional concert on 21st April and are free to choose additional concert(s) that will take place on the 20nd, 23rd or 24th April in the towns around. The local organiser covers costs of additional meals, accommodation and transport on April 20th, 23rd and 24th April in case of a concert on the mentioned dates.

f) Arrival to Slovenia (Maribor or place of first additional concert) and departure from Slovenia (Maribor or place of last additional concert) are at the participants’ costs.

g) Besides the conductor for each of the participating choirs three additional persons are acceptable for accompanying them.

Article 13 – All competition performances take place in front of an audience. A Commission appointed by the Organizing Committee decides the order of the choirs’ appearance through drawing lots.
An International Jury makes the evaluation of the choirs’ performances. Its decisions are final and irrevocable.

APPLICATON DOCUMENTS
Up to 17th February 2012 the choirs taking part in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing should send:
1. Short CV of the choir and its activities and conductor (20 typewritten lines max.) sent by e-mail to mihela.jagodic@jskd.si;
2. Good (sharp) and interesting colour photography of the choir sent by e-mail to mihela.jagodic@jskd.si;
3. Good (sharp) and interesting colour portrait photo of the conductor sent by e-mail to mihela.jagodic@jskd.si;

  1. Declaration that the choir consists of amateur singers;
  2. Precisely filled-in Application Form;
  3. Eight copies of the chosen compositions, necessary for the jury members and the archive of the competition (photocopies allowed only with publisher’s written approval – or composer’s written approval for manuscripts). 7 copies will be returned to the applicants. One copy of the scores will be held in archive of the competition.

Note: Titles of songs and the names of authors should be clearly typed or marked down in their original language.
