International summer theater, puppet theatre and film workshops present an unique opportunity to acquire and supplement basic theater and film knowledge. Internationally established mentors pass on their knowledge and above all are sharing experience with the participants. Workshop participants thus have the opportunity to create their own sovereign artistic image while working and talking through the various perspectives of theatre and film art form.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

I.DIRECTING BASICS – INFORMATION, MOTIVATION, SITUATION, SCENE  (Tatjana Peršuh, Slovenia)

Through a series of practical exercises, we will slowly get to know and explore the stage rules of the scene. Theater production is never literal, it always plays with metaphors and symbols, communicates through atmosphere and establishes context. At the same time, it is also very concrete: the actors are the bearers of the idea, but they always play a concrete situation that is here and now. So the director is always looking for ways to materialize his multifaceted thought in space and time, in the scene. That is why we will explore together what we want to state, why we want to state that and what way best reflects our thought. We will complement your creativity with "artisan" knowledge.

The workshop is primarily aimed at directors, mentors and group leaders. However, it is also intended for others, either those who stand on stage and act out the situations, or those from the audience who try to understand what the author wanted to say.

Through both improvisational and concrete textual work, we will try to answer the above questions, all with the most important red thread: playfulness and group dynamics.

Tatjana Peršuh is a theatre director who studied at AGRFT / University of Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television. In addition to directing projects in institutional theatres (Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica, Sloveninan National Theatre Drama Ljubljana, Maribor Puppet Theatre, Ljubljana Puppet Theatre) she is also directing in non-institutional theatres (Gledališče Glej, PerArtem, Delak, Zavod 0.1). She also works as an author of stage texts and adaptations.

She is the artistic director of the Theater School of the Prva gimnazija Maribor and a mentor for various programs, projects and groups: ŠtudenTeater/StudentTheatre, Theater School PGM, G2G).

II. FINDING YOUR CLOWN – A WORKSHOP ON THEATRICAL CLOWNING (Iva Milley, Croatia)

Jacques Lecoq says that a clown's red nose is the smallest mask in the world, behind which the actor cannot hide. On the contrary, they finally have the opportunity to show what they really are. A contemporary Brazilian theatrical clown Angela de Castro says that being a clown is a state of mind and not a character. In order to establish this state, it is necessary to discover all our curiosity, imagination, spontaneity, naivety and freedom, as these are the main characteristics of every good clown.

A clown exists in the moment. Here and now. They notice details and relive every moment very emotionally and with their whole body.

A clown is always different, always diverse and sees the world from their own perspective - and it is precisely these perspectives that we will be looking for in our workshop. Through play and improvisations everyone will be able to find their personal clown, the one who is always present and hiding in each and every one of us.

At the workshop, we will get to know the theory and practice of theater clowning, which intertwines with circus clowning in a very interesting way. The main purpose of the workshop is for each participant to get to know their own clown, its characteristics and abilities.

Now - let's take off the masks and put on our noses!

Iva Milley was born in Zagreb, where she also studied. She graduated in comparative literature and archeology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb and she is a lifelong graduate student of the additional study of Theatrology. Since 1997, she has worked as a drama pedagogue at the Tirena Theater. She leads juggling and mime workshops in Croatia and abroad, and since 2005 she has been participating as a workshop leader in European drama meetings (EDERED). She writes plays for children and young people. She is employed as a drama pedagogue at the ZKM/ Zagreb Youth Theatre School.

A narrower area of her interests are non-verbal theatre, stage clowning and devised and research-based theatre.

III. PROVE THAT YOU ARE NOT A ROBOT
(Axelle Verkempinck, Belgium)

AI is more present in our lives than ever before. We have chatGPT that can make your school assignments, AI bots that can create art, AI that can make it sound like your favourite artist is singing your lyrics and so much more.

With all of this come many questions:

Axelle Verkempinck, (b. 1995) is an actress and theatre maker. After studying acting at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, she moved to Brussels, where she obtained her master's degree in theatre directing and writing at the RITCS in 2021. Since graduating, she has continued to expand her practice, both in playing and creating her own work and in directing and mentoring others.

IV. . CAMERA SEES EVERYTHING – a screen acting workshop (Živa Selan, Slovenia)

In the workshop we will explore how to unlock hidden emotional spaces, so our face can speak without too much effort. We will work on how to create emotions, states, relationships, dialogues with surgical precision. We will discover the specifics of each participant to become an autonomous and independent co-creator of a film role. We will be learning rules of the craft and how we can use them to our advantage. So the most unique parts of our personalities can come into play. The mission is to reject clichés and become actors, true to ourselves. We will learn to distinguish between staying, sipping, posing, copying and actually living in front of the camera. Allowing the camera to see a living, present human being beating, breathing and glowing in every scene.

Živa Selan graduated in acting from AGRFT / University of Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television. After graduation she became a member of the SLG Celje / Slovenian peoples' theatre Celje ensemble. In 2019, she received a prize for her supporting role in the film Ne bom moč luzerka by Urša Menart at the Slovenian Film Festival, and the following year she was a member of the expert jury at the same festival. Since the beginning of 2023, she has been a member of the acting ensemble at PG Kranj. She acted in several series (V dvoje by Luka Marčetič, Srečno samski directed by Boris Bezić) and films (Zbudi me directed by Marko Šantić, Poslednji heroj directed by Žiga Virac).

V. PLAYING YOUR CHARACTER - a stage acting workshop
(Jonathan Troi, Italy)

The workshop is about different approaches to developing characters from your own person and bringing them alive on stage.

Together the group will put the developed characters into play and into relation to one another, finding and experiencing various types and forms of intertwining emotions, situations and moments.

Character Work is an individual process and appropriate for amateurs as well as professionals. Everyone should find something skill level appropriate to work with in this workshop.

Jonathan Troi has finished a theatre pedagogical study course at TPZ Brixen and has been involved with theatre all of his life (attending international workshops on physical theatre, clowning, comedia del arte, speech and light design).

He is currently working in an institution for amateur and youth theatre - Rotierendes Theater association. All year round he visits schools to hold theatreworkshops and he also works with youth groups through the year.

VI. OBJECTS AND PHYSICAL THEATRE
(Kimmo Tähtivirta, Finland)

Theatre is always about believing in what you do and using your own imagination. Especially when you use puppets or objects or masks. They are just dead things. Unless you with your own imagination make them to be alive. You can make them really strong characters. You can do basically everything with them.

In this workshop we will explore how to make an object to show everything. It is a base of puppetry. A puppet can be just a stick or a stone. All the same rules are there. You need to know how to animate your object, so it will look like a living person. With objects/puppets you can create different world and make somebody to fly or to die in a specific way. You have to show everything with your body and on the other hand hide everything and show it through the object.

We will learn this basic principles (they are there just to break them) and create different characters. But the most important thing is to believe in your own imagination. This workshop is going to be full of principles and on the other hand full of freedom and imagination. You don’t need any experience. Just let’s have fun!

Kimmo Tähtivirta is a theatre director and drama teacher (Master of Arts) and a puppet and mask maker. He also performs in dance or non-verbal productions. Kimmo has graduated from Theatre Academy in Finland, but he has also studied physical theatre in Prague and in Madrid. Kimmo has worked in different countries across Europe, for example in Russia, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Croatia and Turkey. He is mostly focused on non-verbal and physical theatre. .

VII. FROM IDEA TO A CREATION
(Halil Itzhak, Israel)

The best tool we have as actors is our imagination. Everybody has it. Our imagination is usually pushed aside when we are thinking about improvisation and words take its place.

Through a series of inspirational exercises, we will learn how to tell our story. We will understand what drives us, what is the core of what we want to say to the world. We will go to a journey to build our creative selves.

Halil Itzhak graduated at the Yoram Loewenstein Acting Studio in 2000. He featured in numerous television shows and commercials. He has performed in various theatres: Antigone and Improvisation in Herzliya Theater, Soojud in Tzavta Theater, in Tmoona Theater and in various children’s plays. Since 2003 he has been working at Yoram Loewenstein Performing Arts Studio as a Community Program Coordinator, working with children, elderly people, youth in risk, new immigrants.
